Bengaluru's metro is set to reach Tumakuru, transforming homes along this growing corridor.
Discover MoreBengaluru's transit map is about to get a lot bigger. The long-discussed plan to extend Namma Metro from the city's Green Line all the way to Tumakuru has moved into a decisive phase, with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) now submitted to the Karnataka government and headed toward Cabinet approval. For homebuyers and residents along Tumkur Road, this is more than just a transport update — it is a signal of the sustained infrastructure push that is reshaping one of West Bangalore's fastest-growing residential belts.
The project traces its roots to the 2024-25 state budget, when Chief Minister Siddaramaiah proposed the project to extend the metro services from Madavara to Tumakuru. Since then, the plan has steadily progressed. In September 2025, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara announced that the state government had approved a feasibility report for the proposed extension of metro lines from Bengaluru to Tumakuru. That cleared the way for a full Detailed Project Report, and in May 2026 the milestone arrived: the Karnataka government received the Detailed Project Report for the proposed Madavara-Tumakuru Metro Rail project at Vidhana Soudha.
The scale of the project has grown since it was first proposed. Early plans described a proposed 56.6 km line, which will feature 26 new stations, as part of a long-term vision to improve connectivity between the capital city and the fast-developing Tumakuru region. The finalised DPR has since revised these numbers upward: estimated to cost Rs 20,649 crore, this intercity corridor will feature 27 elevated stations and be developed via a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Officials describe this as a landmark moment, with this isn't just another route extension—it's a massive leap forward that marks the state's very first inter-district metro service.
On the ground, the route is designed to directly serve Tumkur Road's residential and industrial belt. The new metro line will begin at Madavara (BIEC) and conclude at Tumakuru's Shira Gate. This alignment runs parallel to the very corridor where Brigade Group has established a strong residential presence, connecting commuters to key areas like the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), further supporting business and tourism-related travel.
The DPR has now been forwarded for the next stage of approvals. Following its submission, the ambitious transit project is now headed straight to the state cabinet for final deliberations. Once cleared, the project moves into tendering and construction, with the PPP structure intended to speed up execution: the authorities plan to implement the Bengaluru–Tumakuru Namma Metro extension under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to ensure faster execution and efficient resource utilisation.
Support for the corridor is strong among local representatives who see it easing the daily grind for commuters from towns along the route. Kunigal MLA Dr H D Ranganath noted that nearly 40 per cent of people from Kunigal travel daily to Bengaluru for work and extending Metro connectivity would help reduce migration pressure on the capital city. Once operational, officials estimate the corridor could reduce travel time between Bengaluru and Tumakuru to nearly one hour — a dramatic cut from current road journeys.
Not everyone agrees the metro is the ideal solution for a route of this length. Some urban transport experts have pushed back, arguing that Metro systems are designed primarily for dense urban mobility and may not be suitable for long-distance regional connectivity over a 60-km stretch, and have floated alternatives like a Regional Rapid Transit System. Even so, the state government's momentum — from feasibility study to DPR to Cabinet review — suggests the Madavara-Tumakuru corridor remains the frontrunner.
For homebuyers evaluating Tumkur Road, the takeaway is straightforward: this corridor is entering a new phase of connectivity-led growth. Brigade Group's developments here, including Brigade Lumina near Chikkabidarakallu and the upcoming Brigade Tumkur Road project, sit directly along this improving transit spine — placing residents within easy reach of Peenya's industrial hub, BIEC, and central Bengaluru as the metro network extends outward.
