Korattur Gets a Connectivity Boost: Metro Corridor and Road Widening Updates

For families who have lived in Korattur for years, the neighbourhood's biggest complaint has always been the same one: getting anywhere else in Chennai takes longer than it should. That is finally starting to change, with two separate but connected infrastructure pushes converging on this North-West Chennai locality — the Villivakkam metro corridor under Chennai Metro Phase 2, and a set of road-widening and flyover works along the Chennai-Tiruttani High Road and the Inner Ring Road.

The headline development is underground. Tunnelling work between Kolathur and Villivakkam as part of the Phase II project was set to commence, with officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited confirming the tunnel boring machine 'Kurinji' had already been lowered at the designated site. This corridor starts as an elevated stretch from Madhavaram to Retteri before transitioning underground at Kolathur Junction, continuing as a roughly five-kilometre subterranean stretch featuring stations at Kolathur Junction, Srinivasa Nagar, Villivakkam Metro, Villivakkam Bus Terminus, and Villivakkam MTH Road. Once complete, this will put three metro stations within easy reach of Korattur residents, a rare density for a single locality.

The scale of the wider project puts this stretch in context. The Rs 63,246 crore expansion comprises three corridors — Madhavaram to SIPCOT (corridor 3), Light House to Poonamallee (corridor 4), and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (corridor 5) — with extensive tunnelling already underway in corridors 3 and 4. Once fully operational, residents of Kolathur and Villivakkam will benefit from seamless connectivity to the city's southern areas, including Mylapore, Adyar, and the IT corridor along OMR, with Villivakkam set to gain three metro stations serving the locality. For Korattur, which sits just a short drive from Villivakkam, this effectively brings metro access into the daily commute radius for the first time.

Above ground, the Highways Department has moved on a parallel front. The State Highway Department has expedited the long-delayed six-laning of the Chennai-Tiruttani High Road from Padi to Tiruninravur, with land acquisition underway along the 22-km stretch to expand the road from the existing four lanes to six lanes. Flyovers are planned at Korattur junction, Ambattur Industrial Estate Bus Terminus junction, Ambattur Telephone Exchange-Chennai Bypass junction, Ambattur-Vanagaram Road junction, and Avadi-Mount Poonamallee Road junction, with all but the Korattur junction flyover set to be integrated into the proposed Koyambedu-Pattabiram Metro Rail corridor. A significant portion of the proposed Koyambedu-Avadi Metro Rail alignment is being planned to run along the median of this arterial road.

A third piece of the puzzle sits right at Korattur's doorstep. While most stretches of the Inner Ring Road support five lanes on either side, the one-kilometre stretch between Villivakkam and Korattur railway stations narrows sharply to just two lanes near the railway overbridge, and the Highways Department has initiated a ₹139 crore widening project for this Padi ROB. This widening expands the Inner Ring Road from 27 metres to 53 metres, adds service roads, and removes a major traffic bottleneck near Villivakkam and Korattur. Anyone who has sat in the daily jam near this railway bridge will recognise exactly why this fix has been years in the making.

Separately, on the Chennai-Tiruttani High Road itself, near-term relief is also on the way at the Korattur junction. Flyovers at the Vanagaram-Ambattur Road and Korattur junctions, each projected to cost ₹110 crore, will feature four lanes to handle up to 70% of vehicles at these busy intersections. Plans also include constructing two more grade separators and widening existing road overbridges to enhance traffic flow.

What does this mean for someone actually looking to buy a home here? Real estate observers already track Korattur as a locality on the rise. Korattur is a popular place to live in Chennai because of its accessibility and good infrastructure, and is home to many working professionals, especially IT professionals, due to its industrial and commercial areas. Analysts also point to a broader shift in demand. South and West Chennai are projected to lead housing growth in 2026, driven by infrastructure development, metro expansion, and sustained residential demand, a trend expected to boost housing sales and indicate a resilient real estate market in these corridors.

Brigade Group has already staked a position in this micro-market with Brigade Korattur, a planned residential development in the locality offering 2 and 3 BHK homes designed for both compact households and growing families. As the metro tunnelling progresses and the CTH Road and Inner Ring Road works move from planning to execution, early movers in Korattur stand to benefit from both improved daily commutes and the price appreciation that typically follows visible, funded infrastructure — rather than projects still stuck on paper.

Questions You Might Have

Will Korattur get a metro station?
Korattur itself does not have a confirmed metro station, but Villivakkam, just a few kilometres away, will get three stations under Chennai Metro Phase 2 Corridor 5, including Villivakkam Metro, Villivakkam Bus Terminus, and Villivakkam MTH Road, putting metro access within easy reach for Korattur residents.
When will the Kolathur-Villivakkam metro tunnel be ready?
Tunnelling on this roughly five-kilometre underground stretch began after the tunnel boring machine 'Kurinji' was positioned at Kolathur, though the underground section of Corridor 5 has already faced delays of over a year, so commissioning is still some years away.
What is happening with road widening near Korattur?
The Chennai-Tiruttani High Road is being widened from four to six lanes between Padi and Tiruninravur, and a separate ₹139 crore project is widening the narrow railway overbridge on the Inner Ring Road between Villivakkam and Korattur stations.
Will there be a flyover at Korattur junction?
Yes, a flyover is planned at the Korattur junction on the Chennai-Tiruttani High Road, designed with four lanes to ease congestion at one of the area's busiest intersections.
How will these infrastructure projects affect property prices in Korattur?
Localities with confirmed metro and road infrastructure typically see steady price appreciation as projects move from announcement to construction. Analysts already expect West Chennai corridors, including areas near Korattur, to see healthy housing demand through 2026 as connectivity improves.
Is Brigade launching a project in Korattur?
Yes, Brigade Korattur is a planned residential development in the locality offering 2 and 3 BHK apartments, positioned to benefit from the area's improving metro and road connectivity.
What is Corridor 5 of Chennai Metro Phase 2?
Corridor 5 runs from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur and is part of the larger Rs 63,246 crore Chennai Metro Phase 2 expansion, which also includes Corridor 3 (Madhavaram to SIPCOT) and Corridor 4 (Light House to Poonamallee).
How far is Korattur from the upcoming Villivakkam metro stations?
Korattur and Villivakkam are neighbouring localities in North-West Chennai, connected by local bus routes and roads, making the upcoming Villivakkam stations a short commute for Korattur residents once operational.
Why was the Kolathur-Villivakkam metro tunnelling delayed?
The underground stretch of Corridor 5 faced delays partly due to earlier land acquisition and clearance challenges, which pushed back the schedule compared to Corridors 3 and 4 that progressed faster.
What other roads connect Korattur to the rest of Chennai?
Korattur is served by the Guindy-Korattur Road linking it to the IT corridor near Guindy, the 100 Feet Road connecting to various city parts, and the Inner Ring Road and Chennai-Tiruttani High Road for wider connectivity.
