Tamil Nadu's longest flyover opens on Avinashi Road, easing Coimbatore's daily commute for good.
Discover MoreCoimbatore has been waiting years for relief on one of its busiest roads, and that wait is now over. The Avinashi Road elevated corridor, a project that began construction in December 2020, has moved from near-completion to a fully operational stretch, with the bituminous road laying finished and finishing touches like markings, streetlights, and speed-sensing cameras put in place before opening. The corridor stretches 10.1 km and was built at a cost of roughly Rs 16.21 billion, making it a significant public investment in the city's road network.
Officials confirmed that no separate trial run was needed before opening, since heavy construction vehicles had already tested the structure's strength during the building phase. One of the most technically challenging parts of the project, the deck work above the live railway lines and high-tension wires near Hopes Junction, was completed as a key milestone before the final rollout. The elevated road itself rests on 304 pillars, runs across 10 lanes, and bypasses about 12 busy traffic intersections that have long slowed down movement along this arterial stretch.
The flyover was officially inaugurated in October 2025 by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who also announced that it would be renamed the G.D. Naidu Elevated Expressway in honour of the pioneering Coimbatore inventor. At the inauguration, the state government credited itself with completing the bulk of the construction after taking charge of the project, positioning it as a flagship infrastructure achievement for the city. The four-lane elevated roadway measures 17.25 metres in width and is supported by service roads on either side, along with stormwater drains and pedestrian footpaths for safer everyday use.
Beyond the traffic numbers, the project has been designed with an eye on sustainability and comfort. Rainwater harvesting systems, deep borewells, and drip irrigation between pillars have been built in to support greenery along the corridor, while modern construction techniques were used to reduce vibration and noise for vehicles passing overhead. Officials expect the corridor to benefit not just daily commuters but also industries, IT parks, and residents who depend on Avinashi Road as one of the city's key arterial routes.
For homebuyers, this kind of infrastructure upgrade tends to have a real, measurable impact. Areas along Avinashi Road and its connecting neighbourhoods, including stretches near Hopes Junction, Peelamedu, and the eastern IT belt, are likely to see improved commute times to the airport, railway stations, and major employment hubs. Reduced congestion along a 10 km stretch that previously choked traffic at multiple signals can meaningfully cut travel time for residents heading to work, school, or the airport, which in turn tends to support steady appreciation in nearby residential markets over the medium term.
Brigade Group has an established presence in Coimbatore's residential market, and corridors like this one are exactly the kind of infrastructure upgrade that shapes where new housing demand concentrates next. As connectivity along Avinashi Road improves, homebuyers evaluating projects in this part of the city gain one more practical reason to consider locations that were previously seen as congested or hard to access during peak hours.
For anyone tracking Coimbatore's real estate story, this flyover is a useful marker. Big infrastructure projects rarely change a city overnight, but they do shift buyer preferences gradually, as commute convenience becomes a bigger factor in the decision to buy a home. The Avinashi Road elevated corridor is one of the clearest recent examples of that shift already unfolding in Coimbatore.
