Kochi's Pink Line metro edges closer to Infopark, promising easier commutes for the IT corridor.
Discover MoreFor thousands of professionals and families living along Kochi's eastern growth belt, the Pink Line has long been the most awaited piece of infrastructure. The 11.2-km Pink Line under Kochi Metro's Phase II extends from JLN Stadium in Kaloor to Infopark in Kakkanad, one of the city's fastest-growing IT and residential hubs. The Union Cabinet approved the implementation of Phase II from JLN Stadium to Infopark via Kakkanad, at a cost of Rs 1,957.05 crore, with a length of 11.17 kms and 11 stations.
On the ground, construction has moved steadily over the past year. So far, 65 pillars have been completed across SEZ, Alinchuvadu, and Vazhakkala, and the construction of 1,135 piles — including 875 for the viaduct and 260 for the stations — has also been completed. Work on pier caps and girders is progressing steadily at the Kalamassery casting yard, where 100 U-girders, 72 A-girders, and 100 pier caps have been completed. Afcons Infrastructure is carrying out the construction at a cost of Rs 1141.32 crore.
The project's timeline, however, has seen more than one revision. Earlier plans called for a phased rollout: KMRL aimed to open the first reach up to Padamugal by June 30, 2026, with five new stations — Palarivattom Junction, Palarivattom Bypass, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala, and Padamugal — while the entire corridor was expected to be operational by December 31, 2026. The foundation stone for Phase II was laid in September 2022, and while the initial deadline was 2025, the timeline was extended to December 2026 to ensure quality execution and minimal disruption to the city's arterial routes. More recently, that schedule has shifted again. Kochi Metro Phase II, connecting JLN Stadium and Infopark, is now expected to be commissioned in August 2027. KMRL had also considered opening parts of the corridor in phases, but later decided to commission the entire line together once all works are completed.
The reasons behind the slippage are largely operational rather than financial. KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera noted that the main challenges include heavy monsoon rains and the shifting of underground pipelines. Utility shifting, construction complexities and coordination with multiple agencies have emerged as major reasons behind the latest delay. These are typical hurdles for dense urban corridors passing through an established business district like Kakkanad, where roads carry heavy daily traffic to office campuses and residential colonies alike.
Industry voices remain optimistic about the corridor's long-term value. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, lauded KMRL's steady progress, noting that the corridor linking Kaloor to Infopark is a lifeline for the city's digital economy, connecting talent with technology hubs while easing congestion.
For homebuyers and investors, the real estate implications are significant. The Pink Line will run up to the Infopark Campus, a rapidly growing IT hub in Kochi, and this is expected to lead to an increase in residential property prices in nearby localities like Pallikkara and Kalamassery. By establishing connectivity with Infopark in Kakkanad, the Pink Line can garner a daily ridership of up to 100,000. With the Kakkanad corridor operational, monthly ridership across the network is expected to increase from the current 30 lakh to nearly 50 lakh. The metro extension is particularly important for Kakkanad, which has emerged as one of Kerala's largest technology and business districts.
The Pink Line is also designed to work alongside existing transit options rather than in isolation. Phase-II of Kochi Metro Rail corridor will provide multimodal integration by integrating the metro alignment with the bus transport system, water transport, and a public bicycle sharing system at various locations. Kakkanad already has an operational water metro terminal linking it to Vyttila, giving residents an early taste of the multimodal future the Pink Line is meant to complete.
For anyone evaluating a home near Kakkanad or Infopark today, the takeaway is straightforward: the metro is real, under active construction, and inching toward completion, even if the exact commissioning date has moved from mid-2026 to a later 2027 window. Locations along the alignment — from Palarivattom to Infopark — are likely to see steady demand as connectivity improves, making this a corridor worth watching closely over the next 12-18 months.
