Namma Metro Phase 3: Ground Construction Launches on Orange and Grey Lines

Ground construction began in June 2026 on Namma Metro Phase 3, which will add two elevated corridors covering 44.65km and 31 stations. This marks a significant moment for Bangalore's public transit infrastructure, as the project was officially launched in August 2025 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the foundation stone laid at that time.

The project comprises the Orange Line from J P Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura, and Grey Line from Hosahalli to Kadabagere. The 32.15km Orange Line will run from J P Nagar 4th Phase in the south to Kempapura in the north along the western stretch of Outer Ring Road (ORR), while the 12.5km Grey Line will connect Hosahalli with Kadabagere along Magadi Road. These two corridors will serve 31 elevated metro stations across western Bangalore.

Civil works for the corridor will be split into at least eight packages, with the first three packages tendered together accounting for 12 stations. JICA signed a ₹6,100 crore loan in March 2026 to support the infrastructure investment, reflecting the scale and importance of this expansion.

Phase-3 will add approximately 44.65 Km of new metro lines, connecting the western part of the city of Bengaluru that were previously underserved. Enhanced connectivity can stimulate local businesses, especially in areas near new metro stations which can also attract investment and development in previously less accessible regions. For homebuyers, this means improved property values and better access to employment centres across the city.

The project includes a major design change with double-decker flyovers on certain sections to reduce future traffic congestion, which will increase the project cost by about 5% and require more land for larger stations and road expansion. The full 44.65 km corridor is targeting completion by May 2031, which means residents in western Bangalore can expect major transit connectivity within the next five years.

The Orange and Blue lines will provide complete metro coverage around the entire Outer Ring Road, and create a full corridor encircling the city. Upon completion, Bengaluru's total metro network will reach approximately 220 km, establishing Bangalore as one of India's most comprehensively connected metro cities.
