Blue Line Phase 2A: Metro Trial Runs Set for October 2026

After years of anticipation, Bengaluru's Namma Metro Blue Line is finally entering its testing phase. According to sources cited by Deccan Herald, trial runs on the 19.75-km Silk Board junction-KR Puram line will begin in October in two stretches, on the KR Puram-Marathahalli and Marathahalli-HSR Layout sections. The announcement follows an earlier statement in June by Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, who confirmed the October timeline for this crucial Outer Ring Road corridor.

The good news comes with a caveat. Work on two key stations, Silk Board and Marathahalli, is still not fully complete. At Marathahalli, all four composite girders have been installed and additional work is ongoing, while at Silk Board, work on the dead end beyond the station is underway to enable train turnback movements toward BTM Layout. BMRCL has also awarded the contract for a travelator and walkway connecting the new Blue Line station to the existing Yellow Line station at Silk Board Junction to Milan Road Buildtech LLP for Rs 55.48 crore, about 8% below the corporation's own estimate. Composite girders over the Silk Board flyover were launched on August 10, with only four spans now pending.

Homebuyers should temper excitement with realistic timelines. While trial operations are expected to begin in October, the full Phase 2A stretch, spanning Central Silk Board, HSR Layout, Agara, Iblur, Bellandur, Kadubeesanahalli, Marathahalli, ISRO, Doddanekkundi, DRDO Sports Complex and KR Puram, is now expected to open to passengers only by March 2027, later than the originally planned late-2026 target. Trial runs typically involve months of testing on rolling stock, signalling, power supply and safety systems before the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety grants clearance for commercial operations.

The Blue Line is part of a larger 58.19-km, Rs 14,788-crore project connecting Central Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport. Beyond Phase 2A, Phase 2B will extend the line from KR Puram through Hebbal to the airport, with the Hebbal-airport stretch targeted for September 2027 and the full corridor now expected around March 2028 due to delays on the KR Puram-Hebbal stretch. Once fully operational, the Blue Line is expected to cut travel time from Central Silk Board to the airport to around 75-90 minutes, and from KR Puram to the airport to just 35-40 minutes.

For homebuyers and investors, this corridor matters because it runs through some of Bengaluru's busiest employment and residential belts, including HSR Layout, Bellandur, Marathahalli and Mahadevapura. These IT-heavy micro-markets have historically seen steady demand from working professionals seeking shorter commutes, and the prospect of a direct metro link along the ORR is likely to sharpen buyer interest in well-connected residential addresses in this belt as construction visibly nears completion.

While the October trial run is an important milestone, it is not the finish line. Commuters and homebuyers tracking this corridor should watch for BMRCL's progress on the Silk Board and Marathahalli stations, the CMRS safety clearance process, and the eventual passenger launch date, all of which will determine exactly when this long-awaited connectivity upgrade becomes a lived reality for residents along the route.
