Central approval strengthens financial hub connectivity for 160,000 daily commuters.
Discover MoreThe Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the extension of the Ahmedabad Metro corridor from GIFT City to Shahpur. The proposed stretch will span 3.33 kilometres and feature three elevated metro stations. This marks a significant milestone for Gujarat's urban transport infrastructure and underscores India's commitment to strengthening its international financial hub.
The project brings momentum at a critical time. The Gujarat Metro network currently spans 68.28 kilometres under Phase-I and Phase-II with 53 stations, with Phase-I operational since September 2022 and Phase-II since January 2026. The metro system currently records an average daily ridership of approximately 1.6 lakh passengers.
The total estimated cost of the extension stands at ₹1,067.35 crore. The project is targeted for completion within four years. The project will be executed by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC), a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat. Once complete, this extension will effectively bridge the core city with GIFT City's emerging business ecosystem.
The ridership potential is substantial. The extended corridor is projected to serve nearly 23,702 passengers daily by 2029, with ridership expected to increase to approximately 58,059 passengers by 2041. GIFT City is being developed as India's first operational greenfield smart city and international financial services hub.
Several multinational corporations, educational institutions, and commercial establishments situated along the route are expected to benefit directly from improved access. The approved stations are GIFT City House, Gujarat Biotechnology University and Shahpur. For daily commuters, the impact is clear: the extension will ease daily commuting for those travelling between Ahmedabad and GIFT City for business, employment, and educational purposes, and by strengthening network integration, the project is set to improve overall passenger convenience and reduce travel time.
Employment generation forms another pillar of the project's impact. The project is expected to generate around 1,000 jobs during construction and provide employment to nearly 250 people in the operations and maintenance phase. For homebuyers and investors in the region, this approval signals long-term infrastructure momentum and rising demand for properties near metro corridors. Properties within 1-2 km of the new stations are likely to see increased interest as businesses and professionals prioritize metro-accessible locations for convenience and commute efficiency.
