A proposed Tarnaka-ECIL metro link could bring northeast Hyderabad closer to the city's rail network.
Discover MoreFor years, residents of Sainikpuri, ECIL, and the surrounding colonies of northeast Hyderabad have depended on road transport for the crucial last-mile connection to the city's metro network. At present, commuters disembark at Mettuguda or Tarnaka and use buses or shared autos for the last mile, a routine that adds significant time to daily commutes toward Secunderabad, HITEC City, and other job hubs. This gap has kept the demand for a direct metro line to ECIL and Sainikpuri alive on local social media and civic forums for several years.
The proposed new line under discussion is the Tarnaka-ECIL corridor, a roughly 7 km stretch, with some reports suggesting a section of this line was going to be built underground given the density of the existing built-up area. An earlier version of the Phase 2 plan had also floated a longer Tank Bund-ECIL route via Tarnaka running about 15 km, indicating that planners have considered multiple alignments over the years to serve this pocket of the city.
What residents are actually pushing for goes a step further. Citizens have proposed that a new route from ECIL to Jubilee Hills via Tirumalagiri would benefit hundreds of residential colonies, making daily commutes smoother and more convenient. Commuters have specifically flagged a route that could pass through Malkajgiri, Anandbagh, Safilguda, Neredmet, Sainikpuri, and AS Rao Nagar before terminating at ECIL, a corridor that would directly serve the Sainikpuri residential belt for the first time.
On the policy front, the Telangana State Cabinet approved the Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase-2 project in October 2024, an expansion estimated to cost ₹24,200 crore and span 76.4 kilometres, to be executed through a public-private partnership with the Centre. However, when the government issued administrative sanction in November 2024, the newly sanctioned corridors under Part 'A' of Phase-II included 31 km Raidurg to Shamshabad RGI Airport, 26 km BHEL to Lakdikapul, 12 km Patny to Kandlakoya, 11 km Isnapur to Miyapur, and 8 km LB Nagar to Hayathnagar - notably, the Tarnaka-ECIL stretch was not among the corridors formally sanctioned in this list. As recently as November 2025, Union Coal Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy stated that the Telangana government has yet to submit the revised Detailed Project Report for the proposed second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail, meaning the Tarnaka-ECIL and Sainikpuri link remains a proposal that civic bodies and residents continue to advocate for rather than a confirmed, funded corridor.
For homebuyers, this distinction matters. Sainikpuri today is best understood as an emerging connectivity story rather than a metro-ready locality - it offers established social infrastructure, tree-lined residential streets, and proximity to Secunderabad Cantonment and ECIL's employment base, with the metro link acting as a potential future catalyst rather than an immediate amenity. Areas that see even proposed metro corridors often see early interest from long-term buyers who prefer to enter before infrastructure catches up with prices.
Brigade Group's activity in the broader north Hyderabad growth belt reflects this same thesis. The developer recently signed a Joint Development Agreement for a premium residential project on a 5.6-acre parcel in the high-growth corridor of Kompally, Hyderabad, with an estimated revenue potential of ₹850 crores. Speaking on the expansion, Amar Mysore, Executive Director, Brigade Enterprises Limited, said Hyderabad is a vital growth market for Brigade, and that the city's robust economic momentum, driven by thriving technology and infrastructure sectors, makes it an ideal market for the company. This underlines how developers are already positioning for northeast and north Hyderabad's next wave of infrastructure-led demand, even before every metro alignment is finalised.
Elsewhere in the city, Brigade continues to expand its Hyderabad portfolio with established addresses such as Brigade Citadel in Moti Nagar, where high-end 2 and 3 BHK homes start at INR 1.12 Crore, alongside the newly launched Brigade Manor, a low-rise 3 & 4 BHK development near HITEC City. For buyers tracking the Sainikpuri and ECIL corridor, the key takeaway is to watch for the revised DPR submission and central approval, since that formal sanction - not just civic demand - is what will ultimately trigger construction timelines and reshape connectivity in this part of the city.
