India's longest six-lane double-decker corridor nearing critical construction milestones.
Discover MoreThe National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has confirmed that the ambitious 21-kilometre Chennai Port–Maduravoyal double-decker elevated corridor is progressing steadily and is now scheduled for completion by November 2027. The project carries an estimated cost of ₹3,570 crore to ₹5,570 crore and is being developed as India's longest six-lane double-decker elevated highway.
The project was originally scheduled for completion by May 2026. However, progress was affected by monsoon-related disruptions and other factors, resulting in a revised completion target of November 2027. Large concrete pillars are being erected along the Cooum, with plans to raise them to a specified height before the onset of the monsoon.
The corridor features an innovative dual-deck design tailored to the city's distinct traffic needs. The lower deck will be open to regular city traffic without toll charges, while the upper deck is being designed exclusively for container trucks travelling to and from Chennai Port's Gate 10. To accelerate construction, work is currently progressing for 11 hours daily — five hours during daytime and six hours at night — with support from traffic police. NHAI has requested the Tamil Nadu government and city police commissioner to extend work hours to up to 16 hours per day.
The expressway will significantly reshape Chennai's cargo and commuter traffic landscape. The project is expected to raise the port's cargo handling capacity from 53 MTPA. By 2047, the figure is projected to reach around 200 MTPA. The elevated freight corridor is expected to eliminate conflicts between freight and city traffic, improving turnaround times at Chennai Port while giving city residents faster, congestion-free commutes.
Of the 21-km corridor, the stretch from Maduravoyal to Koyambedu (7 km) will have a single deck, while the remaining 14 km up to the port will feature a double-decker structure. For home buyers and investors in surrounding areas like Koyambedu, Maduravoyal, and adjacent localities, this infrastructure milestone promises enhanced connectivity and potential property value appreciation as the project progresses toward its final stages.
